Vandals spray-painted obscenities on several buildings and a swastika on Santa Claus’ sleigh at the Dickinson Festival of Lights holiday display. The volunteer-organized display of one million holiday lights in this Galveston County city was vandalized sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. The display is set up at Paul Hopkins Park, 1000 FM 517 W. City Councilman Kerry Neves said a sign that said “The best gift of all is Jesus” had the word “Jesus” spray-painted over and replaced with the word “pot.” Several of the display’s lighted figures like a dog and doghouse were overturned, Neves said. There is no damage estimate yet because volunteers are still testing all the lights to determine which are broken, he said. “It’s sad,” Neves said. “This is something for the community that made it through Hurricane Ike and to provide Christmas cheer. For somebody to do this, it’s appalling. I don’t understand the mentality that would make you want to go do this.” This is the first time in the festival’s 11-year history that it has been vandalized, Neves said. Last year, it attracted approximately 45,000 visitors. The festival is still scheduled to open Nov. 29, but Neves said the real setback is the limited time that volunteers have to fix the damage. Since the end of September, volunteers have been working nights and weekends to set up the display, he said. Because Paul Hopkins Park incurred significant tree damage during Hurricane Ike, many area residents were concerned that the festival wouldn’t be held this year, Neves said. Volunteers spent two weekends after the storm in September cutting down 52 damaged trees, he said. “People need something to look forward to and something they can think of beyond the storm,” Neves said. “They just want normalcy, which is why this is so disappointing.” Dickinson Police Chief Ron Morales said his department does not have any leads. Anyone with information is asked to call 281-337-6308. “I hope we catch them, because if we do, we’re going to make them come out and repair lights,” Neves said. Source I'm not a Xmas fan, but this is just plain ridiculous. I hope when they catch the punks, they get smacked upside the head. |

This is the problem with todays youth. They think they can do whatever they want cuz our lovely system has made them think that they don't have to respect discipline...."You know it just might hurt their self esteem"... Where I was brought up if you did something wrong you got disciplined for it and never did again. We also respected our elders..the youth of today certainly doesn't! I think these punks should pay a very big price for their actions!
